Taking A Leap of Faith
Mr. Dalton started in the field as a supplier and subsequently took on a contractor role before he decided to step into the field of interior design and renovation. From project scheduling to coordinating the works and even the deciphering of blueprints, it was here that he gained the technical skills required to set up and run manage the business. As he continued to learn about the skills that were needed in the specialisation through the years he spent in the partnering trade, he
gained more interest in the subject. In 2012, it was a single article in the newspaper that pushed him to grab the opportunity and step out into the field of interior design and renovation. When he first started, he wanted the company to be more people orientated; he wanted to understand what people wanted, and he wanted the business model to cater to their needs. He understood the concerns of the masses and knew that people generally felt acquiring interior design services was a high-cost expense, and it was a feeling that he wanted to dispel from the clients that he acquired.

Trust and Responsibility
Of course, as with any company, some problems arose from the onset. Zoro Interior started as a
one-man operation and the brand awareness was quite hard to build because of the lack of
company background and platform.

Persevering, Mr. Dalton grew his team and acquired the necessary accreditations to establish his
name in the industry, changing the structure and business model of his company to achieve the
certificates and licenses, which include HDB license, building supervisor certificates, Bizsafe 3,
and BCA and Casetrust accreditations. It is because of these that they have been able to take on
and grow projects from the diverse fields of the residential and commercial arena.

Zoro Interior has grown to an outfit of 20 designers. They have grown and acquired a team of in
house carpenters, plumbers, and electricians and plan to include tiling specialists and other
services to deliver on a one-stop solution, completing the projects end-to-end within their circle.

The risk of setting up multiple companies in different fields yet relevant trade is quite high, and
Mr. Dalton understood the risks when he decided to do this. However, it was a risk he was willing
to take for his clients to better manage and stabilise the project costing and quality of the
services that they provided.

From the designers to the in-house workers, all staff is trained extensively, and a certain level of
professionalism and skill is in place before they are allowed to run indecently independently.
Communication and control monitoring is the key to ensuring that standards are upheld, and
lines are always kept open for anyone, be it the client or the staff, to contact them if anything
should happen.

On this note, the team at Zoro Interior strives to deliver results, both for their clients and the
company, even organising their own internal sharing and training sessions to help each other
improve based on their own experiences. They also coordinate with the sub-contractors regularly
and source out new vendors and suppliers that have new products that can help the client to
save cost. “I feel that without them, we would not have been able to come this far. I have to thank
my team for this.

“Focusing on one thing. Show that you can make things right without
diversifying, and build up your company up. Strive to make it best amongst
your competitors.
That’s the goal. Of course, during the process, you will trip and fall, but
without these, you will never learn. So don’t be afraid to step out. Focus on
what you want to do and think about how you can achieve what you want do.”
